Parents and caretakers who are left to address the outcome and symptoms of sexual abuse in their children are often confused, overwhelmed, and quite possibly scared and devastated by the requirement to defend their Fit to Parent status in Family/Dependency Court. While addressing the formal needs of a family’s case in Family/Dependency Court, A Step Forward simultaneously offers individual parent/caretaker consultation and/or group psychotherapy sessions for parents of sexually abused children. Here, parents can start managing and regulating their emotional turmoil, come to terms with the impact that sexual abuse has had on their children, learn to intervene on their child’s behalf, and create the trust and safety necessary for the child’s recovery. If a non-offending parent has lost custody of their child due to an Inability To Protect, we proactively help that parent become a protective, safe, and trusted parent as we guide them in the process of reinstating their custody whenever possible.
